The Girls who Endlessly Chase after Summer
Popular 5 member girl group KARA, who are the leading figures of the K-POP boom, welcomed their 3rd year anniversary on 11 August. Their new song “Thank You Summer Love” was placed 2nd on the Oricon Weekly Chart and they are releasing their new album “FANTASTIC GIRLS” on 28 August. Without losing momentum, the girls will start their Japan tour from October and it’s set to bring in 140,000 people. So, we asked the cheerful and summer-like fantastic girls about their new album and upcoming tour.
Confidence and satisfaction gained in Japan.
F: First, tell us how you feel about the 3rd year anniversary since your debut in Japan.
Jiyoung: It’s amazing how it has already been 3 years. I feel that time passed really fast. The first thing that comes to mind is Tokyo Dome. I will work hard to show you a new side of me!
Hara: I am overwhelmed with feelings because in these 3 years, we released 9 singles. Looking back, we’ve sang so many songs in such a short period of time. I want the upcoming “KARASIA” tour to be successful.
Seungyeon: I feel that this is the 3rd year anniversary for those who’ve seen us since we came to Japan for the first time. From promoting in Korea to debuting in Japan, each of us carry different feelings within us. Out of the 6 years in the entertainment line, we’ve spent 3 years in Japan.
Nicole: We’ve grown old. (laughs) Time really passed too fast. In these 3 years, we’re satisfied to be able to succeed after all the hard work that we’ve put in.
Gyuri: I’m happy that we’ve reached all our targets, which is to take part in Kouhaku Uta Gassen and to hold a Tokyo Dome concert. As the K-POP boom has calmed down a little, just by relying on KARA’s strength alone, I want us to be able to receive everybody’s love and grow.
F: Your new album “FANTASTIC GIRLS” goes on sale on 28 August. Like “HANABI”, “Promise” and “Hold Me” are ballads that are included in the album.
Gyuri: Yes. As compared to our previous albums, there are more ballads in “FANTASTIC GIRLS” and they give off an adult feel to the album. “Thank You Summer Love” may be the title song but we feel that the hidden masterpiece is “HANABI”.
≪The new album consists of 10 songs, including the hit song “Bye Bye Happy Days” and 6 new songs. A bonus track “Happy Happy Love” is included in the Limited Edition Type C.≫
Refreshing songs to survive the heat.
F: So, what kind of song is “Thank You Summer Love”?
Gyuri: This song talks about overcoming a previous love and looking forward to a new one. This may be a summer song with a lively melody but it gives off a sad vibe and is different from “GO GO SUMMER!”.
F: It’s different from “GO GO SUMMER!” and is a song about a break up.
Gyuri: “GO GO SUMMER!” just gives off an energetic feeling. This time, the feeling we give off is one that shows our maturity. Summer is usually associated with a happy and bright image so to conversely show a brokenhearted and sad image makes me wonder if this combination will go well together.
F: How was the recording?
Seungyeon: KARA’s songs are usually sung at a high key so it was rather difficult. I was busy with the filming of Korean drama “Jang Ok Jung, Living in Love” so I kept practising during my free time.
F: Tell us about the dance point.
Nicole: This dance is called the “Cupid Dance”. During the chorus, you use your fingers to form a pistol and shoot as though you’re a cupid. ♥
F: How about the costume?
Hara: It was general overall but the feature was the fluttering skirt. We were dressed as cheerleaders in the PV. To bring out the bright and lively spirit of summer, we went for the cheerleader style.
Jiyoung: The location of the PV was shot at a camping site, 1 hour away from Seoul and it was very hot. But since I really wanted to go camping with the members, it was a lot of fun. There was a cut where Hara unnie and I played with water; that was the most enjoyable part.
F: So, in relation to “Thank You Summer Love”, what would you like to do in summer?
Jiyoung: I want to go to the beach with my family! We used to go every year in the past but we haven’t gone ever since I debuted.
Hara: I want to water ski!
Nicole: I made plans with Hara to go Hawaii but we ended up not going because of work… That’s why I want to go to Hawaii.
Gyuri: I saw a CM about “flying with hydraulic pressure” and I want to try that (flyboard)! I’m afraid of heights but it should be fine if it’s at sea. (laughs)
Seungyeon: I received my scuba diving license since the end of last year but I haven’t had a chance to challenge that because of our packed schedules.
F: KARA is always energetic. Please tell us a secret to deal with the hot summer.
Jiyoung: Please listen to KARA’s songs. (laughs)
Hara: Exercise well, eat well, eat “hitsumabushi” (rice dish with unagi in a lidded wooden container). (laughs) You need to eat food which gives you strength in summer.
Nicole: By drinking a lot of water. I like shaved ice too and I eat a lot of strawberries, gold kiwis and blueberries. Cherries are in season in summer so I eat a lot of cherries.
Gyuri: People try not to move around when it becomes hot. But I feel that it’s more effective if you exercise a little. It will be good to do some water sports as a hobby.
Seungyeon: On the contrary, I don’t go out when it’s hot but exercise at home.
Experience level UP!!
F: Your tour starts in October. What kind of concert do you want to hold?
Jiyoung: We’re performing many new songs this time. Please look forward to the solo stages and new songs.
Hara: A concert where we can have a great time with the fans. As there are a lot of new songs, I want the fans to memorize them so that we can sing along together.
Nicole: We’ve released various kinds of songs in Japan and will also release an album in Korea so our repertoire has changed. The Tokyo Dome concert was a meaningful one but I want this upcoming concert to have a different atmosphere.
Gyuri: By taking advantage of the experiences from the previous tour and Tokyo Dome concert, I want to upgrade our musicality and stage presence.
F: How about flying, a reputation in Tokyo Dome?
Gyuri: I did try flying in Tokyo Dome but if everyone wants to do it, I’ll try my best. (laughs)
Seungyeon: Until now, I’ve showed a sincere image during my solo stage. This time, I’m thinking of giving a little more intense performance, please look forward to it.
F: Lastly, a message for the fans.
Gyuri: We’re releasing an album this summer and we’ve spent a lot of time with the fans this year. I’m glad to be able to show you how we’ve grown little by little every time we release an album or a single. KARA will strive to work even harder from now. As it is hotter in Japan than in Korea, please take care of yourselves.
